ACROPORA Roatan 2025 Eco Trail Run

On August 2, 2025, Roatan will once again become the vibrant setting of an inspiring and transformative event: the 7th edition of the ACROPORA Roatán Eco Trail Run. Organized by the Bay Islands Conservation Association (BICA), this unique trail race is far more than a test of endurance—it is a community-driven initiative designed to protect the island’s most precious asset: its marine ecosystems. With distances ranging from 2K to 20K, the event invites families, athletes, and environmentally conscious individuals to participate in a day of fitness, education, and conservation action. The starting line will buzz with excitement at 6:00 a.m., launching from Palmetto Bay Plantation, and winding through the lush tropical landscapes that make Roatan a natural paradise.

Bay Islands Conservation Association (BICA)

BICA is a non-governmental environmental organization that has worked in the Bay Islands since the 1990s. With a mission rooted in participatory, transparent, and sustainable conservation, BICA has spent decades protecting the coastal and marine resources that support the social and cultural fabric of island life. Whether advocating for stronger environmental policies, restoring coral reefs, or implementing waste management programs, BICA’s efforts are fueled by a vision of harmony between human communities and the ecosystems that sustain them.

A Legacy of Action Since 2017

The ACROPORA Trail Run was born in 2017 as part of an ambitious awareness campaign to spotlight the importance of reef conservation and reduce plastic pollution. Since then, it has grown into a powerful platform for advocacy and change. Thanks to the momentum of the event, Roatan became one of the first places in Honduras to pass a single-use plastic ban in 2018 under the #PlasticFreeRoatan movement. Additionally, the initiative helped bolster the recyclers’ association and pilot innovative waste separation projects across the islands.

In 2024, BICA’s environmental advocacy expanded to include calls for banning reef-harming sunscreens, continuing to place coral and marine biodiversity at the heart of their campaigns. These milestones show how the race is not just a day-long celebration—but a long-term catalyst for real change.

2025: A Vision for Community and Reef Restoration

As the 2025 edition approaches, the goals of the Eco Trail Run have grown even more ambitious. The event aims to channel its energy and funds toward three major goals that will have a lasting impact on both people and nature:

  • Building a Community Center in Crawfish Rock: 40% of all funds raised from the event will support the construction of a multi-use community center in this vibrant local area. The center is envisioned as a hub for education, cultural preservation, and local empowerment.

  • Expanding Coral Restoration Projects: 30% of the proceeds will directly fund coral restoration efforts in the Bay Islands National Marine Park. Through science-driven initiatives, BICA is working to reverse reef degradation and promote biodiversity across Roatan’s underwater world.

  • Improving Solid Waste Management: The remaining 30% will go toward strengthening solid waste programs in communities surrounding the national marine park. These initiatives are vital in reducing ocean-bound trash and promoting sustainable living practices on the island.

A Family-Friendly Event with Global Impact

The ACROPORA Eco Trail Run welcomes participants of all ages and fitness levels. With options including 2K, 5K, 10K, and 20K distances, the event fosters a spirit of inclusion and community engagement. It’s a space where local families, visitors, athletes, and conservationists come together—not only to celebrate nature but to protect it.

One of the highlights of the race is its scenic route through Roatan’s pristine trails, offering runners breathtaking views of the island’s forests, coastlines, and coral-rich waters. Each step taken on the trail becomes a gesture of solidarity with the reef, a pledge to reduce plastic waste, and a call for sustainable tourism on the island.

Sponsorship That Builds the Future

Over the years, the continued support of sponsors has been instrumental in expanding the reach and impact of the Eco Trail Run. Their generosity has amplified BICA’s ability to host the event and advance key conservation projects. Looking ahead to 2025, sponsors will once again have the opportunity to align their brand with a cause that resonates deeply with both locals and global environmental advocates.

Sponsorship is more than a financial contribution—it is a statement of shared values. It signals a commitment to community upliftment, marine protection, and sustainable development. Those who join BICA’s efforts through the ACROPORA Run are helping to shape a more resilient and sustainable future for Roatan.
