Protect Our Pride 2026: Roatan Marine Park Opens Dive Scholarship Applications
Since 2013, the Roatan Marine Park (RMP) has worked tirelessly to protect the island’s vibrant coral reefs and nurture the next generation of ocean stewards through education and opportunity. This year, RMP has announced the opening of applications for the 2026 Protect Our Pride (POP) Scholarships — an inspiring program designed to empower young islanders to pursue dive certifications and careers in sustainable marine tourism.
The Protect Our Pride initiative is not just a scholarship; it’s a gateway for Roatan’s youth to connect their passion for the sea with meaningful professional growth. Over the years, the program has helped dozens of islanders become certified Dive Masters and Instructors, strengthening the local tourism workforce while fostering a deep respect for reef conservation and marine stewardship.
Empowering the Next Generation of Ocean Guardians
Roatan’s economy and natural beauty are deeply intertwined with its coral reefs — living ecosystems that sustain tourism, fishing, and local livelihoods. Through the Protect Our Pride (POP) program, RMP bridges the gap between environmental conservation and professional development, offering a pathway for young Hondurans to become both skilled divers and ambassadors for marine protection.
The program’s key objectives include:
Training and certifying islanders as Dive Masters or Instructors
Supporting job creation in sustainable marine tourism
Building long-term partnerships between dive shops and local communities
Promoting reef conservation and responsible environmental practices
Encouraging alternative livelihoods through the diving industry
By blending education, conservation, and career development, Protect Our Pride continues to make a tangible difference for Roatan’s youth and the island’s marine ecosystems.
Introducing the Brady Pitcher Dive Scholarship 2026
A special highlight of this year’s program is the Brady Pitcher Dive Scholarship, created in memory of Brady Pitcher — a passionate diver whose love for the ocean and dedication to helping others continues to inspire Roatan’s community.
This unique scholarship was established through the generous support of the Prendergast–Pitcher family, whose connection to the island runs deep. Brady earned his Dive Master certification in Roatan, close to where his great-grandfather was born, making this initiative a heartfelt tribute to both family heritage and his enduring legacy.
“Brady always looked for ways to bring out the greatness in others… Roatan is not only where Brady became a Dive Master, it’s also where our roots are. This scholarship is our way of continuing Brady’s legacy by opening doors for the next generation.” — The Prendergast–Pitcher Family
Through this scholarship, aspiring divers who share Brady’s passion for the ocean can gain access to professional training, mentorship, and environmental education — continuing his mission of uplifting others through the sea.
